Next, AgriSpin looks at innovation in Denmark. From November 30 through December 3, the participants will learn about Danish innovations in the field, the pen and the stable as well as in the stock room for pesticides.

Innovation in the field

Danish farmers are pressured by the Danish environmental legislation which is very restrictive regarding nitrogen allowances. Because of the current regulations, the level of fertilization of Danish farmland with nitrogen is insufficient by as much as 10-20 per cent. The mini wetlands initiative is focused on coming up with a fertilization method that will reduce the leaking of nitrogen into the surrounding environment.

The production systems are mainly the result of a desire to maximize the capacity both with regard to place units and labour. And several of the pen systems were invented in response to legislation on animal welfare and environmental requirements.
